I met Tony one day on a stroll near the “Prater” amusement park. He was wearing his hat and his cloths were all stained with different colors from painting. I knew instantly that I had to photograph him.
Originally from Britain he came to Austria in 1981 after a hurtful separation from his wife. The only thing he was good at was painting. So he started a job in the prater painting all the attractions by hand in his unique style. The prater became his second home, where he is still working with over 75 years old. He says that he can’t live without the prater.Tony likes to think of the prater as his permanent exhibition of art, better than every museum, showing his lifetime achievement.
If you go to the prater today and watch the crowd of people you will see him running around between all the guests and tourists with his stained jacket, a brush, his beloved hat and an unlit cigarette between his lips to paint the next attraction making the prater a more colorful place.
